We might be moving into summer, with temperatures in the UK rising and longer, sunnier days (most of the time!), but last weekend our favourite French ski resort – Val d’Isère – opened for summer skiing.
On Sunday, the resort made history when it re-opened some of its winter pistes for the first time in its 82-year history.
Val d’Isère’s lifts and slopes closed for the 2017/18 season just over a month ago on 01 May 2018, at the end of a record-breaking season for snow cover.
Even after the resort had closed there was more fresh snow in early May, with 30cm falling overnight mid-month:
Two hundred on the slopes on Sunday
As Val d’Isère opened on Sunday, around two hundred skiers and snowboarders decided to enjoy this unique opportunity and took the Funival funicular in La Daille to the top of the Bellevarde.
From there they were able to enjoy the first sections of the ‘OK’, ‘3J’ and ‘Verte’ pistes. After each run, it was onto the Marmottes chair to head back up for more laps.
Snow depths still more than a metre
With remarkable snow depths of still more than a metre deep, those on the mountains were treated to a superb morning’s skiing.
David McCallum is a British property developer who lives in Val d’Isère. He was quoted as saying:
“It was quite remarkable. You could ski 400-500 vertical metres and, after half a dozen runs, we felt we had done a full morning’s skiing with tired legs to match!”
The Bellevarde runs will remain open for the next two weeks, while snow clearing teams continue working their way up to the 3000m Pissaillas Glacier where the summer skiing offering will transfer to from 13 July 2018.
Ski this summer…
The Bellevarde slopes close at 12.10 pm each day. Lift passes for summer skiing in Val d’Isere are available from €28pp per day.
So if you’re really desperate for a ski, then head out to Val d’Isère now. There are great prices for flights to Geneva and you can hire a car or book a transfer with SnowDrone. Some accommodation is available, with the resort opening fully from 30 June 2018.
